At 4:45 p.m., Berkeley Township police responded to Drake Drive and found Tom and Jill Kwatkoski suffering from a gunshot wound, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said. Billhimer later identified the shooter as John Adamo, 54, who died by suicide.
According to a report by the NY Post, Adamo and the Kwatkoskis had been in a "years-long feud," and the couple recently installed new security cameras and "no trespassing" signs identifying Adamo by name.
Citing a neighbor, The Post says that the Kwatkoskis and Adamo began arguing, at which point Adamo ripped one of the cameras off of their house. Adamo then barricaded himself inside of his home for more than two hours, bringing a SWAT Team to the scene, at which point he allegedly died by suicide.
The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office has not confirmed the identity of the Kwatkoskis.
The Kwatkoskis were airlifted to a nearby hospital where they are in critical but stable condition, Billhimer said.
"Tom and Jill are always the first to help others, whether it’s supporting their community or raising their sons with love and care," Jill Stuart, who organized the fundraiser said. "Now, they need our help. The road to recovery will be long, requiring extensive medical treatment, therapy, and support, all while they continue to care for their four sons."
Stuart said the fundraiser will go toward medical bills, daily expenses and helping their children.
As of Wednesday, March 12, the fundraiser has brought in more than $10,000.
Following the shooting, Adamo retreated into his own residence, Billhimer said. The Ocean County Regional SWAT Team were called to the scene and after efforts to have him surrender, they made entry into the residence and found him dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Billhimer said.
